Roles of nutrients in nuts by crop growth stage
Nutrients play essential roles throughout a crop growth cycle. Find out the role of specific nutrients in nut growth and development by growth stage.
Budburst - flowering
- Nitrogen and potassium – reactivate and promote the early growth of new plant tissues leading to maximum tree productivity
- Phosphorus – to build tree reserves and maintain root development
- Calcium - boost reserves and provide a strong platform for high yields
- Boron and zinc* – if not already applied post-harvest - to maximise flowering and strong fruit set
- Iron – If deficiencies are seen
Fruit set
- Nitrogen – maintain leaf development and fruit development
- Potassium – to maximise growth and early fruit uptake
- Calcium – maintain strong growth of healthy tissues
- Sulphur – to maximise nitrogen efficiency in the tree and improve oil and fat content of the fruit
- Boron and zinc* – to maintain growth and development of the flower and developing fruit tissue
Fruit fill - maturity
- Potassium – to build fruit quality during this critical phase
- Nitrogen – in lesser amounts to maintain growth alongside higher rates of potassium
- Calcium, zinc and boron* –to help improve fruit integrity and improve quality and storability
Post-harvest - prior to leaf senescence
- Nitrogen and potassium – to build tree reserves and hence be available for new growth once it commences in the following season
- Calcium and phosphorus – to revitalise rooting and ensure strong availability for the following season
- Boron and zinc* – to build levels in tissues and produce strong spring budburst and flowering in the following crop
* Foliar spray preferred
