Sugar Beet - Growth retardation
Symptoms
Growth of N deficient plants is inhibited, the sugar beet plants remain smaller and have a stiff upright appearance.
The leaves get a light green colour, later they become uniformly chlorotic yellow.
Causes
Nitrogen deficiency.
Sulphur deficiency shows similar symptoms as N deficiency, but chlorosis starts on younger leaves.
Nitrogen deficiency made worse by
- Low or high pH soils
- Sandy or light soils (leaching
- ) Low organic matter
- Drought conditions
- High rainfall (leaching) or heavy irrigation
- Addition or high levels of non-decomposed organic matter/manure (eg straw)
- Fast growing crops
Nitrogen is important for
- Better crop development
- Improved root yield and quality
Yara recommended fertilisers for Nitrogen deficiency
