Broccoli - Discolouration
Symptoms
Broccoli plants lacking boron form hollow stems.
First within the stems watery tissue arise, which turns brown or sometimes black in process of time. Then affected tissue dehumidifies and hollow areas develop.
In contrast to N excess or physiological disease brown patches are visible within the stem.
Causes
Boron deficiency in broccoli
High pH-values of soils support boron deficieny in broccoli and cauliflower.
Excessive N supply or high temperatures cause hollowness too, but in this case tissue remains bright.

Broccoli - Deformation
Symptoms
Recently developed leaves show a crinkled, mottled surface.
Causes
Boron deficiency
Brassica crops need boron in relatively high quantities. B supply is reduced by restricted water uptake, too high or too low pH-values or leaching in sandy soils.
Foliar applications applied during periods of active transpiration are most effective.
Broccoli - Growth retardation
Symptoms
Growth is severely stunted with shortened internodes.
Causes
Boron deficiency (right)
Brassica crops need boron in relatively high quantities. B supply is reduced by restricted water uptake, too high or too low pH-values or leaching in sandy soils.
Foliar applications applied during periods of active transpiration are most effective.
Boron deficiency made worse by
- Sandy soils
- Alkaline soils
- Soils low in organic matter
- High levels of nitrogen
- High levels of calcium
- Cold wet weather
- Periods of drought
Boron is important for
- Stabilization of plant tissues and improved plant and crop strength, working together with Ca
- Reducing effects of nutritional disorders such as tip burn and hollow heart
- Probably minimizing club root
- Increased crop quality and yield
Yara recommended fertilisers for Boron deficiency
YaraLiva NITRABOR
Broccoli: Apply 400 to 600 kg/ha in the base dressing (club root) or broadcast
